April was born during the month of April in 2001, which is how she got her name. She was lucky enough to be loved by two families during her lifetime. She was adopted from a shelter in Muncie, IN by Jennifer Jones and Erik Derrow when she was only a puppy. In 2005, she came to live with Sara Valentine in Fort Wayne and stayed in her loving care until she passed away on January 27, 2014. April was a beautiful, black dog with a luxurious, long coat and intense, expressive eyes. She was a protective, loving, and loyal companion with a formidable bark. April loved to go to Pawster Park dog park in Fort Wayne and she had many canine and human friends there. She enjoyed her unofficial role as the "Fun Police" when she was at the park by barking at and corralling other dogs, who were playing and enjoying themselves. Several children thought April looked like a bear-dog and that was one of her nicknames, especially at the dog park. She loved to roll in the grass, in the snow, and in anything stinky, even dead frogs. April was a gentle giant who enjoyed attention from children, dogs, and even cats without complaint. One of her cat siblings, Slim, had a huge crush on her and he would meow, purr, and wrap himself around her, while kneading his paws into her dense, black fur. Additionally, Slim would plop down right in front of April and reach up toward her muzzle with his outstretched paws. April was never sure what to make of all this attention from a cat, but she seemed to secretly love it. Many speculated about what type of mix April was including Lab, Flat-coated Retriever, Irish Setter, and Newfoundland, but recently a DNA test revealed that April had Chow Chow, German Shepherd, Standard Poodle, and even Jack Russell terrier in her ancestry! April will be missed by her furry siblings including her sister-dog, Priscilla, and her brother-cats, Slim, Baby, Purrbaby, and Rudy. She will be missed by her human family including her mom, Sara, her grandparents, Clark and Elizabeth, and her "cousins," Hunter and Jackson. She was preceded in death by her brother-dog, Pavel, and her feline siblings, Pretty and Baxter. May they all be reunited together over the Rainbow Bridge. Until we meet again...
